How the SIP calculator works

Last reviewed 11 Oct 2026. These pages are analytics from the numbers you enter, not a forecast or a recommendation of any scheme.

Conventions

  • C1 Timing: each instalment is invested on the 1st of the month. Value is read at the end of month n.
  • C2 Rate: i = (1+R)^(1/12) − 1 so a typed 12% is a 12% CAGR. Sites that divide R by 12 slightly overstate growth; we show that figure only as a comparison.
  • C3 Step-up applies at months 13, 25, 37…
  • C4 Tax: FIFO lots, LTCG if held ≥ 13 months, ₹1.25 lakh exemption per FY, STCG 20%, optional 4% cess.
  • C5 Annualised return is the monthly IRR, then (1+x)^12 − 1.

Worked examples

  • S1 ₹10,000 / 12% / 10 years: invested ₹12,00,000 → ₹22,40,359 (true annual return).
  • S2 15 years with 10% step-up: ₹82,74,718.
  • S4 plus ₹1 lakh lumpsum: ₹25,50,944.
  • S6a ₹50 lakh today, 15 years, 6% inflation: SIP ₹25,178 a month flat.
  • S7 S1 equity after tax: ₹21,20,765.
  • S8 start 12 months later: ₹3,54,025 less.
  • H_10y: 276 windows, lowest 4.71% (2010-04–2020-03), median 14.92%, highest 34.01%.

How our numbers differ from R/12 calculators

For ₹10,000 a month at 12% for 10 years this page shows ₹22.40 L. Most sites divide 12% by 12, which would show ₹23.23 L.

History method

The replay uses the same IIMA broad-market total-return series as the SWP calculator, with an Invespar bridge for estimated months. See SWP history methodology.
